Akron City Council Commits $150,000 Over 3 Years For Partnership With Black Chamber

Standing up to demands by President Donald Trump for communities to cut off funding for initiatives that give minorities a hand up, the city of Akron this week made a $150,000 commitment to help the newly formed Black Chamber of Commerce-Summit County take flight. The Black Chamber will receive $50,000 per year from the city after Akron City Council voted unanimously Monday to supply the funds as part of a contractual partnership between the two entities.

Emilia Sykes, D-Akron, on Thursday evening drew attention to the Great Seal of the United States when addressing about 320 attendees of the Black Chamber of Commerce - Summit County inaugural fundraiser and launch event at House-Three-Thirty. The eagle, Sykes pointed out, has 13 olive branch leaves in one talon and 13 arrows in the other.

A business organization dedicated to improving the prospects of Black-owned businesses is forming in Akron. The Black Chamber of Commerce — Summit County was created to ease the racial wealth gap and create more opportunities for African American entrepreneurs, as well as expand economic opportunities in Akron, said Robert DeJournett, its founding president and CEO.
